His existence
Had been lavishing a secret wish
To earn money (even if logic were married
To every perfect individual).

Art was closed.
“You’ve got a week and a bit to get your shit together
Matter!” (And that is grossly offensive –
Of an indecent, obscene or menacing character…)

It was nothing.
A week later, he was arrested by four police officers
An important decision (for the philosophers
Whose atrophying effect chrysalises

Like a joke).

life is just beginning
and biomorphic forms
have sprung into existence!

abandon your dark tonalities
for a vibrant palette
of purples, pinks, glowing greens and yellows…

was out
driving

This little lane,
which still exists

a partly imagined nostalgic panorama

a grainy surface
placed behind the canvas
rubbed with a crayon

the metal
thrown up
the action
the drypoint needle drawn
across the plate
creating
areas
of intensity on

The Late Career of Samuel John Peploe

He generally painted the same motifs – flowers, fruit, fans and crockery –
arranged in different combinations.

Chipstep Spacecore – an electronic music genre name generator for JanusNode

STOP PRESS: Chipstep Spacecore is now available in JavaScript! Link. (Refresh page to generate new names.)

To make this I visited the Wikipedia page List of electronic music genres and harvested the contents according to the following rules:

For genre names of two or more words, the final word is placed in the noun category, and previous words in the adjective category.

Genre names of one word which are not neologisms/compound words are placed in the noun category.

In the case of genre names of one word which are neologisms/compound words, the word is split into its composite parts; the first part is placed in the adjective category, the second in the suffix category. If the word is separated by a hyphen, the adjective keeps the hyphen. If the composite parts have lost some of their letters in the neologising process, those letters are returned to the composite parts.

Therefore I produced three files, one each for nouns, adjectives and suffixes.

Next I created a simple TextDNA file to be run in JanusNode (see janusnode.com) which uses these files to generate names of electronic music genres. I later named it Chipstep Spacecore after an output which I particularly enjoy imagining.

You can download the files here. You will need JanusNode to run the generator. You will then need to put the ‘genre_adjs’, ‘genre_nouns’ and ‘genre_sufs’ files in the ‘Brain Food’ folder, and the ‘chipstep spacecore’ file in a new folder in the ‘TextDNA’ folder.

-William Carlos Williams

I fed this seminal piece of American modernism into BadTranslator, minus line breaks, producing a thirty-five line permutational poem. Then, when I was down at my parents’ house, I used a dictaphone to record the sound of a wheelbarrow being pushed along a gravel track, of a midnight rainstorm, and of the clucking of the hens in the garden. Back in Glasgow, I recited the poem into the dictaphone then mixed it with loops of the recorded sounds. You can listen to the result here (mp3).
